Meet Scarlet
Scarlet Peralta, Montebello Mayor and City Council Representative for District 2 has dedicated her life to serving the community that raised her. As a proud immigrant and local advocate, she’s led efforts to revitalize local parks, enhance public safety, support small businesses, expand youth programs, and support local workers, all while ensuring that Montebello remains a vibrant and inclusive place for everyone.
Scarlet’s leadership has brought meaningful change to Montebello, from championing labor rights to enhancing community programs. Now, as she seeks re-election for District 2, Scarlet is focused on continuing to build a safer, more connected, and prosperous Montebello.
Accomplishments
Led the adoption of Montebello's historic Community Workforce Agreement, expanding unionized job opportunities for residents through city-funded projects. Championed the Hero Pay Ordinance during peak of the COVID -19 pandemic to provide hazard pay for frontline grocery workers.
Approved our city's first dog park at Acuna Park and a community garden. Made significant investments in park amenities and facilities. Established a Public Park Safety Division to enhance monitoring and increase safety at our parks for our families. Established a Recreation Scholarship program.
Approved TopGolf, ensuring it was union-built with 27 labor trades involved, bringing a state-of-the-art entertainment facility and 450 new jobs to our community. Renovated the golf course and approved a new clubhouse, which will boost tax revenue, and eliminate golf course subsidies.
Championing the Edison Trails & Ashiya Park Expansion Project in District 2, a 10-acre park trail that will add 1.1 miles of walking/biking paths, and sports fields along 12 underutilized Edison Right of Ways parcels. Voted against high-density development on the currently underutilized 20 acres of our golf course, instead designating the land for open space amenities ex: sports fields, walking trails,etc.
Reinstated resident-led city commissions, including the Traffic and Safety Commission, which addresses traffic concerns and ensures safer streets, and the Civil Service Commission, which oversees fair hiring practices and employment standards within the city. These commissions are crucial in maintaining, accountability, and safety in our community.
Supported the expansion of the Montebello Community Assistance Program (MCAP) which provides outreach, case management, and temporary housing for the homeless, including the Operation Stay Safe Tiny Homes initiative. Championed an affordable housing development for victims of domestic violence in partnership with the Cesar Chavez Foundation.
Prioritized public safety by boosting yearly budgets. Approved over 18 firefighter & 30 police personnel positions. Approved 2 new fire engines, a ladder truck, and four paramedic squads, improving medical emergency services. Upgraded police resources with new vehicles, body cameras, K-9 heat detection system, invested in enhancing facilities. Established the city’s inaugural First Responders Appreciation event.
Hosted a variety of community initiatives, including my annual Mother’s Day event, Montebello's Women Entrepreneurs Empowerment Conference, and a Welcome Baby event with free diapers, CPR, and child development workshops for new families. Additional events include my Halloween Dog Costume Contest, and annual Father’s Day event offering free haircuts. Proactively supporting our American Legion.
Championed the creation of Montebello's first Tree Replacement program to beautify our community. Established a partnership with TreePeople, to secure grant funding to expand urban forestry initiatives. Spearheading the Montebello Green Resiliency Project, focusing on building sustainable green infrastructure projects through the creation of a pilot workforce development program.
Supported the adoption of a Private Arts Development fund, a fee charged on new developments, to boost funding for art and cultural initiatives. This ensures that all future projects contribute to enhancing our city's artistic landscape through murals, art exhibitions, etc. Supporting a public-private partnership for a new art gallery in the city to create an art hub in our community. Hosted the first Mayor's Art Contest for children in our community.
Introduced the City’s Farmers Market, Summer Street Fest, and Heritage Festival. Revived the Fourth of July Fireworks Show after 15 years. Established the city’s first resource fair for children with disabilities, and launched the Adaptive Inclusive Recreation program, offering year-round activities. Supported the new Rec and Go initiative, providing families with field trips to enriching experiences outside the city.
Led the city's first community online budget survey and held in-person meetings to gather public input on the budget. Maintained balanced budgets, increased transparency by publishing monthly city financials, and implemented new procedures to improve internal controls over procurement, contracts, and financial management. City reserves have reached $30 million. We've won the GFOA award for budget prep for the 3rd time in our history.
Distrito 2
La ciudad de Montebello hizo la transición a elecciones por distrito en junio de 2022, y entró en vigencia para las próximas elecciones de noviembre de 2022. El Distrito 2 incluye el extremo oeste de Montebello, incluidos corredores importantes como Via Campo, N. Wilcox, N. Garfield Blvd y la franja de W. Beverly Blvd.
Los candidatos que se postulan para su distrito deben vivir dentro de los límites del distrito que desean representar y solo los votantes de ese distrito pueden votar por ellos. Si vive dentro del área sombreada en verde, será un honor contar con su voto y espero ser su miembro del consejo.
